Head's Up

“Boys are encouraged to work hard, play hard and take every opportunity open to them: on the river, in the classroom, individually or within a team whilst forming friendships for life.”

Ben Beardmore-Gray

Inside Scoop from a current parent

We were struck immediately by Moulsford’s extraordinary location on the Thames but what impressed us most was the sense of a traditional yet modern education the school combined. There was a natural, unforced politeness in the boys – doors held open without question, all standing when the Head came into the room, but all the technology was state of the art. The school is looking to the future without ignoring the lessons of the past.

It has a nurturing ethos. My eldest son has gained a huge amount of confidence and gone from someone who was inclined to hide at the back of the classroom to someone who auditions for the lead parts in the plays and is up for trying anything.

As Parents, We Love...

  • The school offers an excellent balance of work and play, preparing the children for the best senior schools without putting them under intense pressure at such a young age.
  • There is a lovely colleigate atmosphere in the school. The older boys go to the pre-prep to read to them, while year 7 boys buddy up with year 3 boys to help them make the move into prep school and those friendships are really important.
  • On a practical level there is a very useful bus service both morning and evening. That and an incredibly cheerful and patient office staff make our life as two working parents much simpler.

Our Children Love...

  • ‘The food!’ was the instant answer to this. From home made cookies to hog roasts on the lawn on summer’s days the food really is quite exceptional.
  • The boys are excited by the opportunites the school offers - in particular the after-school activities and the residential trips as you get further up the school.
  • The facilities are a huge draw – the excitement of the outdoor pool in the summer term and kayaking and sailing on the river. The school uses their grounds and facilities in all sorts of ways. It’s not uncommon to learn your times tables playing a game on the astroturf!

School Highlights

Our recently gained ‘Highly Commended’ in the Boys’ School category of the 2018 Independent School Parent Schools of the Year Awards highlights our commitment to providing boys with a top class single-sex education.

Everything we do is geared towards the way boys learn best, with plenty of practical and outdoor learning to keep them stimulated and physically active while learning, as well as exceptional sporting and extra-curricular opportunities, plus outstanding pastoral support. A restructured curriculum has moved away from the traditional Common Entrance exams, providing greater scope for broader learning and intellectual curiosity.

In 2018, 43 boys progressed to 13 top independent senior schools with 10 scholarships awarded. Flexi and weekly boarding encourage independence and prepares those going onto senior boarding schools. Excellent day school options in the area allow parents to keep an open mind on boarding/day choices for the next stage of their son’s education.
